„Set your house in Ordner before you change the world“? OR: „Set your world in Ordner before you change the House“?

In their debate in 2019, which has been viewed over 4 million times on YouTube, the philosopher Slavoj Žižek and the psychologist Jordan Peterson discuss a ‚chicken and egg problem‘ using architectural metaphors. In the discussion, Peterson’s widely propagated psychological foundation of self-improvement argues that one should first set their own psyche and their own ‚house‘ or ‚private space‘ in order before engaging in the broader societal arena. For Peterson, maintaining one’s private mental and physical household is a means to achieve societal change. Žižek, on the other hand, opposes this view. He argues that the means and the end are precisely reversed. The social conditions of society are responsible for shaping the mental and spatial condition of individuals. Although not explicitly emphasized, this is a fundamental question of architectural theory.
Along the metaphor of the house or private space, the essential difference between the two thinkers becomes evident: Žižek advocates a perspective of dialectical materialism (in this case, a combination of Marx and Lacan) and observes from there the systemic effects on the individual’s psyche, while Peterson, conversely, attempts to draw conclusions about society from the psyche of the individual. Both search movements have a certain legitimacy and converge in the contemplation of architecture. According to Žižek, the material circumstances (social class, etc.) are crucial for the individual’s dwelling, whereas for Peterson, the individual bears responsibility for the material circumstances of their dwelling. The latter’s „self-optimization logic“ in the societal vacuum is misleading.
